Gallery Wall

What is a gallery wall to me? First and foremost, it is one of the best ways to give space identity. A gallery wall is a collection of inspirations,  memories and treasures. Having said this, a gallery wall, also known as a salon wall, shouldn’t always be limited to artwork and family photos. There are many rules of putting one together, however, I, personally, like to break them, especially when the gallery wall is a focal point in the room. You really want to achieve the effortless look and draw attention to displayed pieces rather than the structure of the composition. This makes it a lot more personal, which is what a residential gallery wall should be.

 

Here are some basic guidelines:

 

•Measure out the wall itself and establish exact or approximate borders for your display. Gather all items and arrange them on the floor marking the borders with green tape so that the layout is true to scale. 

 

•While there should be room for each piece to breathe, I suggest not to space everything evenly. Pay more attention to the overall composition balance, (from border to border), than to selective nuances.  

 

•Choose one or two items to go in the middle of your arrangement and work your way around and out to the borders. This is usually a better direction to balance off the layout.

 

•Don’t forget to take a photo of the floor composition, this will be your reference during the actual installation. 

 

•You do want to coordinate the selected pieces to the rest of the decor by introducing similar tones and forms but don’t make it a great priority. You will end up with “matchy-matchy” and impersonal result. Decor and design is not the same as staging.

 

•Last but not least, have fun with it and consider consulting a professional to avoid too many holes in that wall.
