Often the Ones We Love Know What’s Best for Us

A life changing moment set me on my career path. This is the story about how 4 hours spent with my uncle not only changed the course of my life, but also established my purpose in real estate.

Years ago when I graduated from university and received a bachelorโ€™s degree in business, I began contemplating whether I wanted to continue studying business and go for a masterโ€™s degree like many of my peers. I decided to take a year off to evaluate what I REALLY wanted. At the time, I was working at an international company as a brand manager, and wasnโ€™t sure if I wanted to grow in that field.

In the summer of that year, my uncle from Chicago was visiting Lithuania, and I had an opportunity to spend some time with him. He was not only a renowned and well-established architect in Chicago, but overall a very wise and business-oriented man. I am happy to call him my mentor.

I expressed my concerns about potentially pursuing a masterโ€™s degree to him over dinner. As a result that dinner turned into a 4-hour brainstorming session. Not only did he encourage me to continue my studies, but described in detail every possible well-paid job in a multitude of industries. Because I was more business and finance-oriented, he explained all the pros and cons of insurance, trading, financing, and real estate. I listened intently and tried to imagine myself in each of those professions.

Real Estate Was Life Changing

Of course, the real estate market in Lithuania was far different from the real estate market in Chicago. People didnโ€™t move as often, and rewards in residential real estate sales were tiny unless you were the CEO of a well-established commercial real estate company. I went ahead and talked to a few managers at some real estate companies and all of them dispensed the same advice: you have a good job, stay where you are.

That, of course, wasnโ€™t the answer I was looking for. So I decided to go with my gut and applied to another university to study real estate management. It wasnโ€™t easy, but it was very satisfying. After one year, I ended up in Canada and had to quit my studies.

However, my pursuit to work in the real estate industry didnโ€™t stop. After a few years in Toronto, I became a licenced realtor.

I couldnโ€™t be more grateful for those 4 hours of brainstorming with my uncle that changed the course of my life.

My professional purpose is to do the same for others as my uncle did for me โ€“ to encourage and mentor younger people, especially young women, to discover their passion and build their wealth through real estate investing. We live in a very fast-changing world where anyone can be an investor, yet we still hold the outdated belief that real estate investing is a male-dominated domain.

The sooner you start developing a real estate mindset, the better. Until then, my years of experience in investing allow me to guide you along paths that you may otherwise not see. It is not always easy to see where there is potential, but I can show you the way.

A few of my friends whom I shared this story with told me that they wished they had someone in their life when they were young to help them navigate their way. The sooner you start, the sooner you can reap the benefits of accumulated wealth, and help others achieve their goals as well.

That’s my life changing moment. What’s yours?
